1 out of 7 Indians Suffer from Mental Illness
1 in 7 Indians suffers from a mental illness? Well, there is something I have to say. Depression and anxiety were the most common mental disorders, with 45.7 million having depression and 44.9 million suffering from anxiety disorders, of the 197.3 million Indians suffering from mental disorders in 2017 - said one study by the psychiatric community. “We are talking about 14.5% of the countries population, of which just about 10% is able to get adequate treatment largely due to neglect as mental illness is still not considered a serious illness and also due to the stigma attached. This is the first time that such a comprehensive report has been put out to know the exact disease burden of mental health in the country that will help make changes at the policy level,” said Dr. Rajesh Sagar, professor, psychiatry department, All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi. “We are talking about 14.5% of the countries population, of which just about 10% is able to get adequate treatment largely due to neglect as mental illness is still not considered a serious illness and also due to the stigma attached. For heaven’s sake can we stop making these doomsday predictions!!! Why is the mental health industry trying to make profits by propagating a mental illness model? For heaven’s sake have a mental recovery model. Promote health and not illness. Do you get my point? Because a different statistic shows that outcomes for recovery from so-called ‘mental illnesses’ are actually better for lower and middle-income countries because we have whole families [the joint family system] taking care of people with mental health issues in these countries. Schizophrenia sufferers are seen as healing agents and gifted shamans in certain cultures. Sanity or insanity is just a matter of opinion!!
