How serious is mental health?
What is known as ‘Mental Illness’ is not a brain disease in as far as Schizophrenia and Depression are concerned. It is just that the individual acts out in response to certain horribly traumatizing life situations in the absence of support of the kind that is needed. Madness is a civilizational myth. It happens because the world around you has actually been mad. Contrary to some weird theories saying Schizophrenia/other mental conditions are because of genes and hormones going haywire. The family more often than not has been terribly dysfunctional and that is why some people begin becoming prey to these conditions. Set right the environment around the individual. And this is why many self-advocates have asked - am I mad or is the world around me mad???? How did it start first of all?? And you cannot dismiss this because they are the ones who have actually experienced it and come out of it! Medicines may or may not be required - that is a different issue that needs a different platform for discussion!!!
