IT WAS THE ERA OF USER-SURVIVORS

HEY GUYS, HERE IS AN EXTRACT FROM MY UPCOMING BOOK!!!

“THE SPECIAL GIFTS I HAVE MUST ALSO BE MADE AVAILABLE TO THE OTHERS – THE WHOLE GAMUT OF USERS AND SURVIVORS. O SIR, O MADAM, IF ONLY YOU WERE TO LET ME TALK OF WHAT REALLY HELPED TO OVERCOME MY PSYCHOSOCIAL DISABILITY!!!” SAID I.

The user survivor movement across the world was rapidly growing and flourishing. The excitement was in the air even as users and survivors of psychiatry joined hands to oust psychiatric domination and the methods involved in forced psychiatric treatment.

Who were the user-survivors? What did being a user-survivor entail?

These were the people who psychiatry had treated sometime or the other for what was called ‘mental illness’. The users found Psychiatry helpful in addressing their problems but still had issues with some unhelpful bits in Psychiatry that they wanted to change.

The survivors were people who found Psychiatry unhelpful [as they had been treated quite insensitively by Psychiatry] and wanted to do away with the system. The survivors felt they had been violated by Psychiatry. They felt they had been treated quite inhumanly by Psychiatry. Both users and survivors of Psychiatry advocated for person-tailored services and humane practices that were so much the better.

Some people from India and across the globe who were prominent user-survivors [meaning they had been treated by the Psychiatric system once upon a time and found it disdainful and had fought their way to recovery without relying too much upon psychiatry] said in no uncertain terms that treatment for psychiatric disorders needed to be holistic and involve multiple perspectives from the users and not just the mental health professions following a medical model. There was increasing dissent among the multiple players in mental health not least of all the caregivers of the psychosocially challenged who had been labeling their clients with the phrase ‘mentally ill’….
