International Youth Day

Demand mental health and emotional support that is rightfully yours and gets it!!! What is it that you should make your elders understand?

We need to adopt a new approach towards addressing social and stress-related problems that can escalate into mental health problems if not treated at an early stage thus causing unbearable anguish both to the youth and the family. After all, anyone of our children can succumb to a psychosocial disability when faced with innumerable pressures and tragic misfortunes if they don’t have a shoulder to lean on or an environmental buffer to absorb their emotional shocks.
It is important for mental health therapeutic systems to be sensitive too. We need to save teenagers from civil deaths wherein a person lives but is still treated as a non-entity and is deprived of her/his human rights in the context of being a patient [user-consumer is a more sensitive term that could be used to address such people]. If the quality of life of the teenager is to be good then it is imperative that she /he whoever, be empowered-be in total control of his/her own life and in a position to bring out their true potential in whatever area they choose to excel. To facilitate this, their lived realities should be addressed.
If the problems of adolescents are treated at a very early stage such a tragedy as mentioned above will never take place – for it is in the childhood and teenage phase of an individual’s life that such problems begin to take root owing to familial stress, being part of a dysfunctional family, being part of a family that doesn’t understand the needs of a teenager owing to ignorance of parents, being part of a family that does not nurture and support the teenager – (also being part of a family that indulges in gender discrimination) these as per my research are the initial precursors to mental illness in later stages if the social situation is not addressed.

Catch them young !!!- This Is my approach towards instituting a better society for today’s youth who are part of stress-prone environments.
